10 January 2013 – 8:30 am

Although the bane of many a Londoner’s life, this week marks 150 years of the world’s first underground system. Known affectionately as the Tube.

Marked with pomp and ceremony, celebrations have been lavish. A steam locomotive running the first route between Paddington and Farringdon was booked up sometime ago. In attendance were public figures, media and rail fans.

Carrying four million people daily, the London Underground is one of the most well used transport systems in Europe.

Recent innovations, have seen walk-through trains, air conditioning and increased passenger aides, for example LEDs indicating the platform side at the next station.
