Last night saw a spectacular London 2012 Paralympic Games opening ceremony created by experienced theatrical directors and featuring a range of amateur and professional performers, including some household names, such as Sir Ian McKellan and Stephen Hawking.

The London 2012 Paralympics will be the biggest so far, featuring over 4000 athletes from around 170 countries.

Starting in 1948 as the Stoke Mandeville Games, the Paralympics are now an important feature on the global sporting calendar. 2012 are the first Games Queen Elizabeth II has opened simultaneously.

Before the opening, the Queen issued a statement, “It is with tremendous pride that the people of London and the United Kingdom welcome the world to the London 2012 Paralympic Games. We look forward to celebrating the uplifting spirit which distinguishes the Paralympic Games from other events, drawing on Britain’s unique sporting heritage.”

Best of luck to all those taking part.
